SYDNEY EISTEDDFOD KEEPING ARTISTS ENGAGED

Next week would have marked the start of this year's Sydney Eisteddfod Festival which has been inspiring and engaging with Australia's young performers with its annual Festival for over 86 years. Cancelled this year due to the coronavirus crisis, this not-for-profit organisation has rolled up its sleeves to ensure they continue to provide opportunities to the great array of talent across dance, drama, poetry, classical & contemporary music. Keeping on all their staff, albeit from home, the Sydney Eisteddfod Team have launched two campaigns to re-engage and stay connected with their community during this time.

The Boite's 2020 Matsudo Week concert focuses on Okinawa, the southernmost island of Japan, somewhat isolated from the mainland. Okinawan music uses a different scale, the folk music is upbeat and catchy. Featuring Brandon Lee on koto and Mion Kamei (Sanshin - Okinawan Shamisen). The concert will introduce the audience to the various styles of Okinawa music, while also presenting music from mainland Japan.

300 works from 286 Indigenous artists presented in the major event of The Torch's Indigenous Arts in Prisons and Community program. In the past I was a crook, you know a jail bird, but now I am an artist. My daughter, she is so proud of that. I never used to think of myself that way. Chris Austin. It changes you once you get to interact with cultural knowledge and start to paint your own stories.

A coalition of vertical (tall-screen) film festivals has launched a crowdsourced initiative for filmmaker-creators living around the globe under social distancing. We're asking them to submit ONE VERTICAL SHOT encapsulating their lived experiences or hopes for the future on a single (extra)ordinary day in human history during Covid-19: May Day, 1 May 2020. They should be portrait-orientation vertical videos of up to 15 seconds, and the best will be curated into a single Creative Commons vertical short film called Onwards, Upwards.
