Sir Simon Rattle, Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. Time for Three {Tf3} are three young American musicians who defy classification. As comfortable playing their own interpretations of Kanye West and Mumford & Sons as they are performing Bach and Mozart, this inimitable string trio will bring their unique mix of virtuosity, charisma and showmanship to Sydney this month to perform three exciting concerts with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. @sydsymph

Zach De Pue (violin), Nick Kendall (violin) and Ranaan Meyer (double bass) met while studying together at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Here they discovered a shared love for playing music inspired by hip-hop, bluegrass, jazz and improvisation, and Tf3 was formed. “The three of us grew up listening to all kinds of music – ’90s hip-hop, grunge, bluegrass – and we’ve always played a wide variety of music,” Kendall says. “We’re part of a new generation of classically trained musicians who approach diverse styles from the same heartfelt place. We hear and feel it all in a similar way, as just music.”

The group have built a massive international fan-base, in part due to the success of their YouTube videos; their covers of songs by Katy Perry, Kanye West and Mumford & Sons have collectively received hundreds of thousands of views and have been featured on CNN and Huffington Post.

Their virtuosic and edgy performance style has been met with critical acclaim, with high praise from classical music icons including Sir Simon Rattle, Chief Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic: “Simply put, they’re a knockout! Three benevolent monsters – monsters of ability and technique surely. But also conveyers of an infectious joy that I find both touching and moving. I would recommend them not only for entertainment value, but also for anyone looking to see how all types of American music can develop, when life and passion such as this are breathed into it.”

Tf3 have performed all over the world, including onstage in Carnegie Hall, at famed jazz club Yoshi’s in San Francisco and at multiple music festivals in Europe, and have released four albums together. The group have been the artists-in-residence with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra since 2009.
