WINNERS ANNOUNCED - 2012 Melbourne Design Awards

The 50 winners across the six major categories for the 2012 Melbourne Design Awards have been announced by Mark Bergin, Creative Director, design100 on Wednesday 19 September at the Business and Investment Centre, Melbourne.

A record number of 225 shortlisted entries were drawn from 550 entries that were received for this year’s Award.

The winners are judged by industry and the general public – the market place. Over 4500 online industry votes along with close to 4000 market place votes were received.

From the six major categories the winners include: 'Living Places' Suburban Revival by BENT Architecture; Open House Melbourne 2012; Protecting us All - Human Rights Campaign by Fenton Stephens; L'Oreal Paris Powder Room by CarrSpace; 'Now and When: Australian Urbanism' exhibition, typography design by Design By Pidgeon; ANAM 2012 Website by August; Crown Lager packaging refresh by Davidson Branding; cBraille - A lighting exhibition for people who are blind by cSigns; Good Shepherd Chapel - Abbotsford by Robert Simeoni Pty Ltd Architects; Fitzgerald Optometrist by Two Design; Lonsdale Street, Dandenong by Electrolight; Backpack Bed™ by Swags for Homeless; 'modelis' collection by etch by design.

The MDAs are open across 6 major categories – Space, Visual, Object, Fashion, Experience and Marketplace and feature a wide range of sub-categories covering excellence across fields including products and furnishings, architecture, interiors, landscape design, advertising graphic design, fashion, photography and digital media. The finalists are representative of some of the best designers in their fields.

‘The awards finalists and winners represent the best of the best in their specialty, the design marketplace is a broad landscape and it’s a pleasure to be able to recognize a wealth of talent’, says Mark Bergin, Creative Director, design100.

‘We’ve been overwhelmed with the input from the industry, with over 4000 votes and a 50 strong judging panel. The awards have captured a wide survey of industry opinion. Beyond that we’ve had over 100% increase in marketplace input, with voting, sharing and entries from the marketplace.

The vision behind the awards has been to grow the conversation around design, champion and celebrate both those that commission design and also create design, our 2012 mission has been a great success. And 2013 is already in planning’.

Now in its 3rd year the MDAs and are open to emerging and professional designers and to those who commission design.

The Melbourne Design Awards were announced in conjunction with the Premier’s Design Awards, which recognise and reward Victorian designers and businesses using exemplar design effectively and sustainably to deliver business impact.
