During the April 2023 school holidays, artists Martine Perret & David Dare Parker travelled to Wiluna Youth Centre onto the lands of the Martu People to explore photography, comic books, self-expression, and teamwork. Martine and David had visited the Wiluna community on a Creative Challenge residency in 2022, and were excited to reconnect with the children.

Working as a team, participants developed their documentary skills by photographing each other having fun playing pool, computer games, and sport. Participants enjoyed painting, creating masks, and developing characters. They decided to work towards creating a collaborative comic book, where their unique masks helped bring the comic book characters to life. They experimented with special effects to create the final book, which was printed professionally so participants could have a copy of their work to keep!

The comic book artwork was displayed along with behind-the-scenes footage at a final celebration exhibition, attended by participants, their family and shire community members.

This residency was proudly supported by BHP.

Creative Challenge is AWESOME Arts’ core education program that embeds contemporary teaching artists in schools across the state. The residency program aims to build pride in community and explore self-expression through project management and creative learning skills.
