This year’s judges are Godwin Bradbeer and Yvette Coppersmith, both of whom will bring their artistic experiences to this year’s prize. Godwin has a reputation for intense and large scale figurative drawing. From 2005 until 2010 he was the Head of Drawing in the School of Art at RMIT University in Melbourne.
Godwin has held over forty solo exhibitions and had a the survey exhibition of his work that toured eight regional galleries in Australia. Godwin’s work is included within many public and private the collections, including of the Australian National Gallery and the National Gallery of Victoria, etc. His work has also been shown at the Art Gallery of N.S.W. in the Dobell Drawing Award, the national award for drawing in Australia, a prize that he won in 1998 and has subsequently been included a further 11 times.
Yvette holds a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) from the Victorian College of the Arts (2001) and has exhibited in Melbourne and Sydney at over ten commercial galleries. Yvette was the winner of the inaugural Metro 5 Art Prize in 2003 and has been finalist in the Rick Amor Self Portrait Prize, Arthur Guy Painting Prize, Fletcher Jones Art Prize, Portia Geach Memorial Award, Archibald Prize and The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. Yvette’s works are held in the collections of Artbank, Trinity College, The University of Melbourne, Supreme Court of Victoria, Benalla Art Gallery, Melbourne High School, and the Jewish Museum of Australia.
In its third year, the Who is Looking at You? previous winners have been Guy Morgan, selected for the Archibald, Black Swan and Doug Moran Portrait Prizes in the following year, and Kimberley Liddle, who is about to hold her winning solo exhibition following the 2016 prize. You be the judge as to whether she has taken this opportunity to push boundaries and develop her technique further. You won’t be disappointed.
