Created for ages 0 to 12 years, the Festival aims to empower children to foster their creativity through a series of hands-on art-making workshops and performances. This year’s theme, ‘Making Your Mark’, sees the curated activities ask children to reflect on the mark they make with family, friends, communities and the environment.
A draw card of this year’s program will be the major work entitled Pipe Dreams Green by the Co-Artistic Director of Ensemble Offspring, Damien Ricketson. In the centre of Casula Powerhouse, a giant singing-tree will be made from brightly coloured plastic tubes and performed as though it is a surreal panpipe. To make their mark on the play-tree, children will be invited to help cultivate the roots, sing, dance and make wind instruments of their own.
Highlights of the program include the world premiere theatre performance of Margueritte Pepper’s Trash Alchemy; The Children’s Republic of Liverpool where families are invited to create a constitution and flag for Sydney’s first micro-state; artist Vien Luong’s The Garden of Saying Goodbye which explores the art of both letting go and remembering; and The Colourpult led by artist Stephen Mushin where attendees can turn the outside of the Centre into a work of art using a handmade catapult.
Over the four days, children will be invited to unleash their inner performer with a hip hop dance competition, get inspired with short films from the Little Big Shots Film Festival, take part in a creative workshop led by local children or join budding filmmakers to create a documentary of their Festival experience.
With over 9,000 guests taking part in the 2014 Festival, this year is set to be even bigger with an abundance of innovative and exciting theatre and arts projects included in the 2015 program.
