‘The Dressmaker and the Painter’

Robyn Burgess and Heather Lyons

…do what frightens you…

This collaboration follows a series of paintings and drawings Burgess made on-site from Velazquez’ ‘Las Meninas’ in Spain, 2014. Those works evolved into a venture between Burgess and Lyons and their attempt to demonstrate how the legacy of Velazquez and subsequent artists can enrich ones reaction/response to contemporary art practices. The collaboration initially examines costume, the crinoline and their architectural, sculptural and engineered use of space. The texture and sense of touch in Lyons three-dimensional forms is evident in Burgess’ paintings, drawings and sculptures.
…bodies of fabric and paint…

Ateneo de Manila University Artist in Residence - Ryan Villamael

Filipino visual artist Ryan Villamael has gained recognition for his innovative use of the technique of paper cutting – starting from his early two-dimensional and symmetrical configurations to three-dimensional works. Recent works explore the notion of physical and political geographies through the use of maps and archival photographs. Villamael contests imposed borders, meticulously carving out his own entities. He transforms the two-dimensional records of the dominant into fantastical delicate sculptures or a miniature city scape. Ryan is the recipient of the 2015 Ateneo Art Gallery / La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre Residency Grant.
