‘The “Blank Canvas is not Blank” series is as much a spiritual as an artistic journey for Fatemeh Vafaeinejad. Mystic Sufi philosophers like Jalaladdin Rumi and Fariduddin ‘Attar come immediately to mind when we contemplate these works which, as masterfully and synthetically explained by ‘Attar and pointed out by Fatemeh herself, emphasize that the artist must “Step on the road and ask no question / The road itself tells you where to go”. The blank canvases, under the surface of which things grow organically but in a structured manner like nature itself, is a mirror to an understanding of the position of the artist as both an active “creator” and a passive beneficiary of something created independently from her will. This dichotomy between creator and created can be stretched, like the canvas itself (!), in different directions to include the contrast between present and past, cause and effect, fullness and emptiness, teaching and learning, evident and hidden meanings. Ultimately, it is about the acceptance that knowledge is not achieved only through an effective action but also through a deeper understanding of what already exists and lies just beneath the surface, ready to emerge if one lets it to.’ —Stefano Carboni, Director, Art Gallery of Western Australia
