The Balmain Sinfonia was founded in 1991 by its artistic director and conductor Gary Stavrou. Originally performing in Rozelle and Balmain, in recent years it was Macquarie University's resident orchestra. Now it returns to its heartland and a new home in the lively and colourful Italian Forum with its comfortable and well-appointed auditorium and surrounding restaurants, bars and shops.

Stavrou said the move to the Italian Forum was very exciting and would improve audiences' experience with excellent lighting and acoustics as well as the delightful restaurants and cafes nearby. The Saturday 5pm timing was chosen specifically to suit dining and parking options.

Of the program he said new and returning fans of the orchestra would enjoy a varied 'treat'. He described the Leonore Overture of Beethoven as 'a miracle of dramatic music'.

"This rollercoaster of a work covers enormous emotional range from the poetic to the utterly heroic." In the Brahms' Symphony, the orchestra promises a work "inexhaustible in its power to thrill and transport listeners". Tommy Tycho's violin concerto is an Australian work with influences derived from the composer's native Hungary as well as Russian and Persian themes from his time as personal pianist to the Shah of Iran. Tycho was also musical director at Channel 7 for 15 years, directed countless Royal Command Performances and conducted all ABC Symphony orchestras before his death in 2013. His compositions for the concert platform, stage & screen number more than 1500! He met Maria Lindsay when accompanying her at the Sydney Town Hall in 1984. In 2002 he delivered what he promised then: her own violin concerto!

Maria Lindsay has an active career as soloist, chamber musician, artistic director, ensemble leader and teacher. She is founding leader of the Lurline Chamber Orchestra and is in demand for her vibrant concerto performances, making regular appearances as soloist with many orchestras including the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony and Australian Chamber Orchestra and has toured extensively worldwide. She is a member of the Australian World Orchestra and toured with Maestro Zubin Mehta to India last year. As guest concertmaster she has worked with Sydney Philharmonia, Sydney Opera House Orchestra, Willoughby Symphony, St Laurence Chamber Orchestra and many others. Tommy Tycho dedicated his exquisite Violin Concerto to Maria and she premiered it in 2010.

Join Maria, Gary and the Balmain Sinfonia for this attractive "“ and well-priced "“ Saturday afternoon treat in the colourful and tasty precinct of the Italian Forum!
