Tubular Bells For Two

BY The Street Theatre | 12-Mar-2015
When Mike Oldfield released his 1973 masterpiece, Tubular Bells, it required more than 30 musicians to perform it. Now, 40 years on, it's performed by two massively talented Australian multi-instrumentalists, who faithfully recreate the album on stage, in real time in a unique and compelling theatrical experience. Leaping between instruments that are strewn across the stage the show is a musical tour de force, a faithful interpretation of the album and a physical marathon!

“The musical equivalent of the triathlon – with bells on.” The Scotsman TUBULAR BELLS by Mike Oldfield is perhaps the most unlikely smash hit record ever to be released. The beautiful and sprawling progressive Celtic - folk -rock opus shot to number one in album charts around the world during 1973 and ‘74, throwing its 19 year old composer into the international spotlight.

Released by the young entrepreneur Richard Branson, the immense success of the album is credited with kick-starting the Virgin empire. Now forty years later, two Australian musicians have achieved a herculean feat in recreating the beauty and playful lunacy of one of the most important albums of the 20th Century with just four hands and four feet. Tubular Bells for Two burst onto the international scene following sell out seasons at the Sydney Festival, Sydney Fringe Festival and the New Zealand International Arts Festival.

It was the smash-hit show of the 2012 & 2013 Edinburgh Festival Fringe - winning a Herald Angel Award and garnering several five star reviews. Tubular Bells for Two is intricately choreographed and rehearsed to present the work true to the original recording, with all its multi-layered madness and subtle beauty intact. The show requires over twenty instruments, which are artfully juggled to bring this influential masterpiece to life.
