"Then just sit still and bear your gums so it looks like you're smiling. Believe me, if you can just do that "“ if you can just behave "“ the world will open for you."

Red Stitch presents the Australian premiere of Trevor, a hilarious and heart-wrenching play inspired by true events "“ a 200 pound chimpanzee and his owner Sandra, who swears he'd never hurt a fly "“ well, not on purpose.

A former showbiz chimpanzee, Trevor lives with his widowed keeper Sandra in a small town far from the Hollywood glitz that Trevor once tasted. Sandra keeps a life-size cardboard cutout of his most famous onetime costar, Morgan Fairchild. But at age 11, Trevor is not quite as adorable as he used to be.

Trevor wants nothing more than to abandon his washed-up life and return to Hollywood. But there's one major obstacle: he can't understand anyone, and nobody can understand him.

Playwright Nick Jones is a writer and co-producer of the critically acclaimed Netflix series Orange is the New Black, which has garnered numerous accolades, including a Writer's Guild Award, Golden Globe, and Emmy nominations.

Directed by Denis Moore the Australian premiere of Trevor will feature Red Stitch Ensemble members Dion Mills, Andrea Swifte and Eva Seymour alongside former Graduate Ensemble member and alumni Rory Kelly as the title role, with special guest actors Kevin Hofbauer (returning to the company following his role in The Flick), and Andrew Gilbert and Angela Kennedy in their Red Stitch debuts. Denis has worked as an actor and director for MTC, STC, STCSA, Playbox, Malthouse Theatre, La Mama, Melbourne Workers Theatre, Theatreworks, and Red Stitch. He has directed over 40 plays, including A Hard God for STC, Bedlam Autos for MTC and Harvest for Red Stitch, for which he received Victorian Green Room Awards for Best Direction and Best Production. "Trevor's absurdist mixture of showbiz satire and real-life poignancy is continually delightful"¦how resonant the story actually is" ★★★★ Time Out
