TRENT FOO’S FESTIVE LOVE LETTER TO FAMILY, A CHINESE CHRISTMAS, ARRIVES AT KXT ON BROADWAY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
21st October, 2025: FooFrame Productions in association with bAKEHOUSE Theatre Co is thrilled to present Trent Foo’s A Chinese Christmas, a heartwarming celebration of family, heritage and the generational ties that connect us, from 10th to 20th December.

Directed by Monica Sayers (Women on the Verge – Hayes Theatre Co, Circus Cabaret Tricks & Tricksters - NIDA, Rockstars - NIDA) and featuring a stellar cast of three, A Chinese Christmas mixes English and Chinese, myth and memory, live traditional music and text, to explore the complexities of growing up Chinese in Australia and the unique result of blending two cultures.

It’s Christmas Eve in Australia, and Heepa is hosting the annual family Christmas Party. Only problem is… his grandma isn’t coming. In a last-ditch effort to win her back, Heepa travels to yōudū 幽都 — the Chinese underworld — with his trusty summoning book, hoping to convince his ghostly ancestors to use their magic to help him. But to earn their blessing, he must face his past, confront his future, and reckon with the complicated relationship he has with his Paw Paw.

A Chinese Christmas is a heartwarming, nostalgic, and often silly tale about a boy and his grandmother. Blending English and Chinese, myth and memory, live traditional music and text, it delves into the complexities of growing up Chinese in Australia and the unique result of blending two cultures together. A love letter to the ones who raised us—a celebration of family, cultural identity, and the ties that connect us across generations.

Playwright and Creative Producer Trent Foo said, "I'm excited to share my new work with Sydney audiences in December. I think audiences are going to be really surprised - the play is simultaneously very contemporary and very traditional, which creates this hilarious dynamic that has been so much fun to play with in the rehearsal room. I set out to write my grandma a love letter - an ode to her and everything she's been through - and I'm really proud of how far it's come. While not fully autobiographical, I've drawn a lot from my own experiences and relationships, and I've had a lot of dramaturgical support from different people, so the storytelling feels very authentic, and captures the nuance of growing up in Australia.

The team putting this show together is next level - their talent, commitment, and passion to storytelling and making work that leaves a tangible impact on audiences is incredible. The play couldn't be in better hands. I love how intimate the space is at KXT, and there has been a lot of thought and effort put into creating an immersive Christmas-underworld experience, which is going to be just magical.

At the end of the day, I hope audiences walk away from the show feeling jolly, understood, and inspired to call their loved ones, going into the silly season. It’s funny, heartfelt, and truly magical. I can’t wait for you to see it. Love you Paw Paw."

Filled with wide-eyed nostalgia and festive hilarity, don’t miss this poignant love letter to the ones who raised us.
