Toy to the World - CALL FOR ARTISTS!!
The project successfully launched in 2010/11 raising $2000 for the Victorian AIDS Council in Melbourne, Australia, and is now calling for Artists for the 2012/13 project to help us more than double that figure!
The project consists of two events, distinct but entwined; the Design Day where the public can knock down a beer to a phat mix of DJ tunes while they watch painters, designers and graff artists take to the blank toy canvas' with markers, spray cans, cutters and glue, they can even join in if they're feeling creative; and the second; incorporated into the opening of Melbourne's premiere GLBTi cultural event, Midsumma, TOY TO THE WORLD exhibits and auctions off the creations of these talented artists, raising funds to help bring some joy into the world by contributing to furthering HIV research and treatment development.
ARTISTS CAN REGISTER FOR THE PROJECT VIA THE FACEBOOK PAGE: www.facebook.com/toy2theworld
IT IS FREE TO ENTER BUT A $10 DEPOSIT IS COLLECTED AT THE DESIGN DAY AND REFUNDED WHEN COMPLETED BEAR IS RETURNED.
This year we're also trying to raise funds to provide artists more to work with at the Design Day through a campaign on crowd-funding website POZIBLE, the campaign hopes to raise $2500 which can be put towards purchasing more toys for artists and more supplies, any excess funds raised will go straight to the Victorian AIDS Council. The campaign can be found at: www.pozible.com/toy2theworld
The event will launch this year on:
SATURDAY 17TH NOVEMBER 2012
at SECTION 8, Tattersalls Ln. 11am - 5pm
THIS IS WHERE ARTISTS PICK UP THEIR TOY.
Artists MUST collect their toy on the launch/design day, or have someone collect it for them, it is $10 to enter, this will be refunded when the completed toy is returned to the project for exhibition, or can be donated to the cause (Victorian AIDS Council) - Pre-pay by PayPal (must register first) or pay on the design day.
Artists may either commence, and complete work on their toy at the Design Day using paint and markers we supply (we can only supply so much though, so we recommend bringing some from home if you're set on a certain result - we're currently fundraising for supplies through www.pozible.com/toy2theworld please check it out), OR they may take their toy home to complete and return by mail or in person by JANUARY 4TH 2013.
RETURN IN PERSON (please call to make a time!):
72 HOPE STREET
RETURN BY MAIL:
72 HOPE ST
(if sending by mail we recommend ensuring your paint job is dry and wrapping in bubble wrap)
Artists wishing to paint at Section8 will get access to space based on first in, best dressed, we're limited to only about 50 artists for the day, we start at 11am and go til 5pm (at which point if you're not finished you can take your bear home to complete) - this live painting social workshop kind of day has been a heaps of fun in past, even if you're not painting we encourage you to hang out for a bit, sink a beer, listen to some tunes, check out what the competition are up to.
TOY TO THE WORLD is a charity event and does ask that Artists donate their completed toy to the exhibition that is held in January to be auctioned to raise funds for the Victorian AIDS Council, in the good spirit of the project we trust artists to use and return supplies at the design day as well as return their toy bears, however we have had some toys go all Toy Story and wonder off on us, so the $10 deposit cannot be returned until after we receive a returned toy with completed entry form (supplied with toy).
The Exhibition/Auction will launch in late January for 3 weeks, at the Spring Street Convention Centre, Foyer Area, 1 Spring St Melbourne. All artists will be notified of exact dates of the exhibition, WINNERS OF THE COMPETITION ASPECT will be announced at the OPENING NIGHT of the exhibition and prizes awarded.
We have 150 x 5 inch toys, artists can complete more than one but are required to pay the $10 (refundable) deposit per bear, max. 2 per artist.
We also have 20 x 15 inch larger toy bears, these toys are available first come first served and require both a $30 deposit (refunded upon return of bear - or can be donated to the charity) AND a $20 non-refundable payment, if you are interested in transforming one of these larger toys, you may inquire on the launch day or via email pre-register for one.
Finally there are no limits to how you modify your toy, you are not limited to paint and markers, you can mold, morph, add, attach, sculpt, spray, speckle, scratch, cut, carve and glue.
