Tony Curran Parts of You are Dying @ ART ATRIUM

BY Art Atrium | 10-Jul-2013
The works in Parts of You Are Dying depict individuals as amorphous and shifting entities; constantly in flux, in formation, deformation and reconfiguration. By using digital drawings as a starting point, the works in this exhibition include moving image portraits as well as oil paintings that sit uncomfortably between abstraction and figuration.

This exhibition returns portraiture from the tyranny of the photograph back to the primacy of drawing. The process of digital drawing allows a constant build up of marks recording memory of the subject, simultaneously building up and destroying the forms of the individual. This ongoing and simultaneous construction and destruction of the individual tempts the viewer by promising more about the subject, but ultimately dissolving its function as a portrait.

Tony Curran's practice is an investigation into contemporary strategies in representing ideas of self, in art.
