Working with these new writers since February 2019, Balodis and Pearce have assisted in the development of script and concept, with a theme centring on the topic of women vigilantes. Featuring five original works 'She is Vigilante' answers a call for female representation, both on stage and off.
“There’s a lot of talk from artists about making their work accessible and “engaging new audiences”, but it’s something we don’t often achieve.”, explains Director Bridget Balodis.
“I think sometimes it can feel like the arts is happening in a middle-class bubble. We wanted to see how far we could push that idea of arts access and really open it up. We wanted to make the Theatre Works stage a place that could be performed on by regular, local people. And we also wanted to combine that with exciting new writing. We chose our theme of women vigilantes because the idea of having some kind of defiant power is really appealing to most women. We were interested in how that could create some flawed and complex characters for our performers to wrestle with.”
Premiere works and writers in 'She is Vigilante' include:
Chanella Macri with 'You May Not Rest Now, There are Monsters Nearby' - Seven children. Abducted from seven of the safest, well lit neighbourhoods. A story about colonisation, anger and where you have to be born for your life to matter.
Ivana Brehas and Krystalla Pearce with 'Vigil/ant/e' - Three vignettes exploring rape culture, misogyny, and female anger in which we watch a wor(l)d evolve and change its meaning, from vigil into vigilant and finally vigilante.
Lauren Anderson and Meegan May with 'Athena, Huntress of Men' - When a late night commute turns deadly, a woman and her attacker come face to face with a crotch-kicking, hair-whipping masked guardian.
Roshelle Fong with 'Papillon741929butterflyemoji' - VR artist and programmer Vivien has created a virtual pathway for refugees to return home as avatars. But when their physical world lives become compromised, how far will Vivien go to protect their anonymity?
Maja Amanita with 'Robot Coupe' - A satirical series of adverts for domestic appliances used by women in self defence.
Renowned for being the birthplace of some of Australia’s most exciting artists and arts makers, Theatre Works continues that tradition by offering Melbourne audiences a unique and never seen before catalogue of works and artists with 'She is Vigilante'.
Running for eight shows only from the 7th to the 16th of November, this premiere season is an impressive reminder that women can be scary, powerful, and ferocious. Not to be missed.
