This year, as part of Sydney's Comedy Festival, it's double-comedy-trouble as each state sends its best funny fighting pair for the first ever comedy-duo 'death match'.

In 2012, the Queensland banana-benders won for the belt for the first time in the championship's 25-year history. The Steampunk Warriors are back with a future-retro vengeance to defend their title.

This year NSW fields the youngest team ever to compete. Bridie Connell and Tom Walker, both leading comedy lights at Sydney University Theatresports, triumphed at last year's NSW final, The Cranston Cup.

Calling themselves MotherFather (say it slowly, say it fast…), their kooky '50's "apple-pie" image belies their postmodern comic style and their razor-sharp wit. And they're in hot form having recently also won the Sydney Impro Festival's Cup-Winners' Cup Final at the Bondi Pavilion.

The other states - all with their own vibrant impro comedy scenes and unique style - have selected their finest and funniest combo:

• Arty, theatrical "Impro Melbourne" boasts some of the Australia's most renowned improvisers.
• Wild and funny, Brisbane's "Impro Mafia" has one of Australia's long-running impro shows.
• Western Australia's "Just Improvise" is a leader in Theatresports and corporate comedy.
• South Australia's "ImproNOW" and "On the Fly" run impro festivals at the Adelaide Fringe.
• Canberra's "ImproACT" hosts the world-renowned annual International "ImproVention".

The Theatresports National Championships have been running for over 25 years and have seen some of the country's funniest and most talented people grace its stage: stars like Wil Anderson, Julia Zemiro, Robyn Butler, The Axis of Awesome, Andrew Denton, Andrew O'Keefe, Adam Spencer… even Geoffrey Rush got involved on his way to fame and fortune.

Theatresports is the ultimate comedy challenge: improvised competitive comedy scenes with celebrity judges and raucous audience participation. Like Thank God You're Here on adrenaline! Directed and hosted by Marko Mustac, it's a Sydney Comedy Festival must-see!
