The Trust Company as Trustee of the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships today revealed plans to raise the profile of the award and build its social media network by announcing the 2013 award winners via Facebook. A total prize pool of $160,000 is on offer, with eight individual scholarships to be awarded. Recipients of the 2013 Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships will be announced in February via The Trust Company’s Awards and Scholarships Facebook page.

Each day from Monday 25 February until Thursday 28 February 2013, The Trust Company will announce the name of one of the four category winners including acting, painting, sculpture and singing along with videos, photos and audio clips of their entries and their profile. Head of Philanthropy and Community at The Trust Company, Simon Lewis, said he was looking forward to using social media to help build a community around the Marten Bequest as well as The Trust Company’s suite of awards for which it is the Trustee.

Overall The Trust Company has a portfolio of over 50 scholarships and awards including the Miles Franklin Literary Award and the Portia Geach Memorial Award. “Social media is an effective tool for raising the profile of these talented, young artists. The decision to use Facebook was largely based on the extent to which social media is being used to share information, particularly amongst the 21-35 age group eligible for the Marten Bequest Scholarships. “Building a social media community offers a supportive network for like minded emerging artists and accomplished past winners, which we hope will become a hub of information related to funding and support services available to emerging artists,” Mr Lewis said.

The Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships were established by John Chisholm Marten (1908 – 1966), a performing artist himself, well known for his appreciation and support of the arts community. Marten established the program through a charitable trust, the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships, to award funding to talented Australians so they could explore and develop their artistic gifts either abroad and/or interstate.

Marten understood the value of travel to enhance your artistic education and hoped with the scholarships that he could strengthen the cultural heritage of Australia. The Scholarships are awarded to candidates who show outstanding ability and promise in nine categories offered over alternate years. In addition to the 2013 categories, architecture, ballet, instrumental music, poetry and prose were offered in 2012 and are open to young Australian born artists aged between 21-35 years old (17 for ballet).
