The seeds of gardening bloom and flourish through this springtime art exhibition

Published by: Kathryn Coller | 3-Sep-2019
The love of gardening is a seed once sown, that never dies" [Gertrude Jekyll] Just in time for Spring "A Seed Once Sown" is coming to the Old Fire Station Gallery at Redcliffe. Artists Michelle Gratwick and Cecilia Hine have put together a show that represents their love of the natural world and highlights the importance of a healthy environment for the survival of all life on earth. Cecilia was introduced to the thriving Redcliffe art scene by Michelle who moved to Clontarf recently and as they are both fans of each other's work decided it was time to collaborate on a show and that the Old Fire Station would be the perfect location. Michelle believes that having friends who are also fellow artists, really is essential to living a creative life. "I would say we both have to paint. It's an impulse we could not ignore, and we support each other to keep going"
It is fitting that Kathleen O' Sullivan who describes the idea for her business Garden Graffiti as "a seed in her head that sprouted" will be joining the artists and creating a floral installation especially for the show. Michelle and Cecilia are very excited that there will be live plants and flowers as part of the show as well as their artistic interpretations. Cecilia has created works centred around the suburban garden that has been lovingly created and cared for by her husband. "It is sort of funny that I am involved in this show as I am notorious for killing plants! But thanks to my husband I have a beautiful garden outside my studio window that inspires me every day. I am inspired by the survival of plants even in the most inhospitable places like the busy road we live on in Hawthorne"

Michelle believes that having friends who are also fellow artists, really is essential to living a creative life. "I would say we both have to paint. It's an impulse we could not ignore, and we support each other to keep going" As well as her love of gardening Michelle has a deep connection and fascination with mangroves for their wild shapes, reflections and the hidden rich ecology hidden beneath the mud. The opening event for the show will be an afternoon tea with live music by Anthony Biancotti on the 21st of September from 2-5 pm There will also be a closing event on the 12th of October from 5-9pm with a special screening of the film "A Little Chaos" which stars Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman and is a fictional account of the creation of the Garden of Versailles followed by a performance of electronic music by bouwHouse. A gold coin donation is requested for this event.
