About Stanthorpe Art Festival

The Stanthorpe Art Festival is organised by a sub-committee of the Stanthorpe Art Gallery Society Inc. and conducts this major event in Stanthorpe every two years.

First started in 1972, this festival has grown in reputation to now attract interest from artists from each State, both Territories and New Zealand.

The Stanthorpe Art Festival winner currently receives $20,000. In addition there is an award for the local artist (being a resident in the Southern Downs Regional Council and Tenterfield Shire Council areas) "“ The $1000 Elaine Burton award in memory of Margaret Burton. The $1000 Anne Lindsay Emerging Artist award for the successful emerging artist who will have practised as a professional artist continually for less than 5 years and has a wish to develop their career in their chosen art form. The volunteer workforce at the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery decides the winner of the $500 Anne Lindsay Volunteer Choice Award. Throughout the exhibition, gallery visitors cast a vote for the Borderline Regional Arts Association Public Choice Award.

The Stanthorpe Art Festival exhibition commences with a Gala Opening Night and the exhibition runs for 6 weeks.

The Stanthorpe Art Festival organising committee may, at their discretion, acquire works for the Southern Downs Regional Council collection, which is housed at the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery.
