RAWA Schools - Punmu and Kunawarritji
Artists-in-residence Charlotte O'Shea and Kero O'Shea returned to work with students in Punmu and Kunawarritji communities at RAWA School this year with AWESOME Art's Creative Challenge program from 16 “ 27 November 2020, proudly supported by BHP.

Creative Challenge is AWESOME's core education program. AWESOME Arts send artists into schools to offer high quality arts experiences for young people to explore their individual and community identity, communicate their unique identity and instil a sense of pride in who they are and where they live.

Charlotte and Kero have been visiting RAWA School for Creative Challenge residencies for the last 3 years, building strong relationships with the communities who were excited to welcome back their collaborative visual and media arts workshops. RAWA School has campuses over 2 remote Martu communities in the Great Sandy Desert “ and involved a great amount of 4WDing between communities on the weekend!

RAWA students explored puppetry with Charlotte focusing on characterisation and storytelling, using playful, abstract ways of creating artwork such as paint pouring and stamps. Charlotte earlier worked with AWESOME Arts this year to deliver family programming for the State Library of Western Australia's Disrupted Festival Of Ideas, where she worked with children and members of the public to create a textile wall using woven recycled materials kindly donated by Anglicare.

Children also had the opportunity to develop narratives in their language through storyboarding, acting and shooting short films with resident filmmaker Kero about their experiences of community and country. Kero has also just completed the Creative Challenge Metro Schools program where he worked with Year 5 and 6 students at Bentley Primary School on their documentary project, Bentley Cares'. Kero engaged RAWA students with all aspects of filmmaking, including sound recording “ giving a special thanks to the student who enthusiastically rolled around on the ground to keep their microphone out of the frame!

AWESOME Arts looks forward to returning in 2021 with another year of their Creative Challenge regional education program throughout WA communities with thanks to the support of their sponsors BHP and Healthway. To find out more, visit their website: https://awesomearts.com/
