Sullivan+Strumpf presents Baden Pailthorpe's Asset Pack
One of Asia-Pacific's leading contemporary art galleries, Sullivan+Strumpf is proud to present Asset Pack - a new solo exhibition in Sydney by one of Australia's most exciting digital artists, Baden Pailthorpe from 27 September to 19 October 2019.

As part of a generation of artists whose practice is shaped by Internet culture, Pailthorpe is known for hyper-real animations, video and sculpture that engage with the spatiality of power, politics and the cultures of late capitalism.
Asset Pack intensifies this examination by reinterpreting the material culture of digital marketplaces through a series of real-time animations, computer sculptures, physical textures, speculative objects and a large-scale light installation.
"An asset can be any element of a digital program - including 2D and 3D models, sound effects, code or templates, and even complete projects that can be used by software platforms such as smartphone applications or video games. These assets or asset packs can be bought and sold by creators and make up a significant part of the digital economy," said artist Baden Pailthorpe.
Generative animations depict a series of readymade collections of virtual objects, programmed with spatially intelligent algorithms, while a series of extreme computer sculptures blur the boundaries of aesthetic experience and functionality. Through these artworks, Pailthorpe unites a collection of physical and virtual assets that together create new systems of meaning. He recontextualises these objects and redefines their potential as artefacts of our contemporary moment.
Sullivan+Strumpf, co-founder and director, Ursula Sullivan says the exhibition greatly expands Pailthorpe's practice to-date.
"Baden's work has always been mind-bending, but for this exhibition he merges the flat animated world with the actual 3D world, making his dystopic vision an immersive visual feast. There is no one in Australia working at this high level of futuristic social commentary within digital art forms. It will be a show not to be missed," said Sullivan.

More recently, he has been awarded an Asialink/Australia Council residency with the renowned Japanese digital art collective teamLab. Baden has also been awarded residencies at Screen Space, Melbourne and the CiteÌ Inernationale des Arts, Paris, where he developed a performance work for the Centre Pompidou in 2014.
Baden's 2018 exhibition, Clanger,at UTS Art, University of Technology Sydney resulted from Pailthorpe's Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) 2017 Synapse Artist Residency. Clanger paired the statistical tracking of AFL player performance with the emotional intensities of the crowd, using anonymous player and crowd data captured during the 2017 AFL Round 23 Swans v Carlton game. The exhibition program included a round table discussion which considered the relationship between competitive sport and creativity.

Baden Pailthorpe (b. 1984) is part of a generation of artists whose practice is shaped by Internet culture. He holds a Ph.D from the University of New South Wales, an MFA from l'UniversiteÌ Paris VIII, an MA from COFA and a BA from the University of Sydney. Much of Baden Pailthorpe's work consists of hyper-real animations, video and sculpture that engage with the spatiality of power, politics and the cultures of late-capitalism. In 2013, Baden was invited to be the inaugural artist in residence at the Australian War Memorial, where he produced his most significant body of work to date: Spatial Operations (2015).More recently, he has been awarded an Asialink/Australia Council residency with the renowned Japanese digital art collective teamLab.
