Story time in Nullagine

Published by: AWESOME Arts | 17-Nov-2021
AWESOME Art’s takes their very first trip to the community of Nullagine on the Traditional lands of the Nyiyaparli People to complete a 2-week Creative Challenge residency.
From Monday 14th of June to Friday the 25th of June AWESOME artists completed a Creative Challenge in Nullagine Community, proudly sponsored by BHP. Calvin Chee and Nathan Gardiner, two Western Australian artists, left the suburbs of Perth and travelled out to Nullagine to explore media arts and photography with the students.

This year’s Creative Challenge theme is ‘Gathering’, and empowers children to interpret this however they would like. Children, elders, parents and teachers commenced the program by gathering around a fire to share important stories about their community. As resonant stories began to emerge, the young participants began to select their favourite stories and compile them into a creative storyboard narrative.

Children hand-painted a free-standing photo backdrop installation. They then created a photo story that utilised a stunning ‘light painting’ technique using torches and long exposure photography. The photos were put through the test with students narrowing them down to only 20 images which were combined with the written word to create a beautiful story of living in Nullagine Community!
