SOCIETY is a show about a room and the people in it. It is about categories, it is about queues. It is about creating, destroying, and creating again. It is about people having private conversations with each other. Bitching. It is the ratings we give each other. It is about nothing. It is about a group of people figuring each other out. Creating rules to make sense of things, and then abandoning them. Society is unexpected. Being scared is permitted.

Theatre of Speed is Back to Back Theatre's experimental lab for performance making, a group of fifteen young people with intellectual disabilities who meet weekly to make art together. They collaborate with guest artists to create work for theatre, film, and experimental performance.

You're invited to join them for their first major production since 2015.

Tamara Searle, Back to Back Theatre's Artistic Associate who leads Theatre of Speed and will direct SOCIETY, said the piece was informed by TOS member's unique experiences and perspectives as people living with disability.

"Society is a sometimes playful, sometimes troubling exploration of social behaviour" she said.

"TOS make work by asking questions of themselves and then staging these questions. Because of their experience with disability, the actors in Theatre of Speed have particular insights into interdependence versus independence. They have drawn on those particular experiences to create this performance."

Theatre of Speed members and SOCIETY co-collaborators Ben Oakes, Liam White and Laura Berrisford said

"We tell the show through theatrical examinations of certain situations in groups."

"Through reactions and voices."

"And through dance."

Theatre of Speed participated in the development of works that have become part Back to Back Theatre's touring repertoire. Theatre of Speed created the first iteration of RADIAL in 2016, an experimental film-making project that has since toured to Berlin (No Limits Festival, 2017) and Scotland (National Theatre Scotland, 2018). Theatre of Speed also contributed to the development of SINGLE CHANNEL VIDEO which premiered at Geelong After Dark in 2018 and will enter Back to Back Theatre's touring program in 2019. `
