And the name for the new Rockhampton Art Gallery is"¦.the Rockhampton Museum of Art. Rockhampton Regional Councillors today voted unanimously for the new name after it was widely supported during public consultation last month.
A poll was put to the community with three name suggestions for the new gallery - Rockhampton Museum of Art, Rex Gallery Rockhampton and Thozet Art Gallery.

Rockhampton Museum of Art was the favourite among the public submissions which helped informed Council's final decision this morning.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said 'Rockhampton Museum of Art' is synonymous with a world-class collection in what will be a landmark building on Quay Street next to Customs House.

"Given the significance of our collection and the opportunity to have one of the greatest regional galleries in the country, it is important that the name has prominence and reflects the experience that visitors will have," Mayor Strelow said.

"Once the doors open to the Rockhampton Museum of Art, people will be able to enjoy a place that has many galleries inside, with our existing collection and travelling collections on display.

"I once again thank the State and Federal Governments for both contributing such a significant amount of funding that has made this incredible project possible for our community."

The gallery, which has over 4700 square metres of exhibition space, is designed by Clare Designs, well known for Brisbane's GoMa, and architects Conrad Gargett and Brian Hooper.

"The design, the space, and the location of the gallery means we will have so much opportunity to attract and accept major exhibitions. And now, with a name, we can begin building a brand and promote our reputation as a place to visit for art," Mayor Strelow said.

"Our existing Art Gallery on Victoria Parade still remains open, and while our staff are busy packing up 2,500 pieces of the collection, they are also busy preparing the program for the Rockhampton Museum of Art's opening in 2021."

This project is proudly funded by the Australian Government and Queensland Government in association with Rockhampton Regional Council.
