Outpouring of emotion through art

Published by: Kathryn Coller | 1-Mar-2020
When does art begin? Is it a significant event or series of events that changes the course of one's life journey? For Stephen Mills, creativity really began for him in 2006 after a major life jolt from a motor vehicle accident [MVA]. A fractured vertebrae from the impact was the direct result to his body, but an artist was born at this pivotal time. Unplanned occurrences can have unexpected results, and for Stephen, the ebb and flow of life has been artistically documented. Stephen's upcoming exhibition is titled OUTPOURING.

The very title evokes an emotional response. Stephen calls himself a mixed media or an experimental artist. He says that he enjoys adding different textures to his work. His arts practice drives him to seek out all sorts of different techniques. When he's not painting for himself, Stephen teaches students in innovative ways at his "Cre8ive Workshops".

Stephen believes that to make discoveries, risks must be taken and the artist must become immersed in the process. "A well planned journey can only lead to an already known destination". He declares that at some stage the painting process must lose some control. "From chaos the Universe was formed. Allowing chaos to initially occur, an artist can then take control, and through synthesizing and simplifying, new images are discovered, - images that are potent," he says. "The past somehow transcends through this process into the future".
