In three unforgettable performances at the City Recital Hall, Sydney (February 12th), the Newcastle City Hall (February 13th) and Melbourne Recital Centre (February 18th), Australia’s most dynamic chamber group presents works by Shostakovich, GRAMMY award-winner Jessie Montgomery and pioneering 20th century composer Gerald Finzi, alongside the world premiere of Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth’s new double concerto for clarinet and trumpet, A Turning Sky.
Known for his soaring eclecticism and stunning refinement, Principal Trumpet of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra David Elton has performed with the world’s finest orchestras from the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. Alongside his performance work, Elton is also a renowned educator serving on the faculty of the Royal College of Music in London and the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne.
Joining Elton onstage is Omega Ensemble’s principal pianist Vatche Jambazian , stepping into the spotlight as soloist. Together the pair perform Shostakovich’s daring Concerto No.1 for Piano, Trumpet and Strings, a whirlwind of classical fanfare, jazz-hall swagger and streetwise energy, inspired by the works of Hindemith and Stravinsky.
Next, Omega Ensemble’s Artistic Director and acclaimed Australian clarinetist David Rowden performs Gerald Finzi’s lyrical Clarinet Concerto, a 20th century masterpiece of tender beauty and pastoral serenity.
GRAMMY award-winning composer Jessie Montgomery’s radiant Starburst also features. This genre-bending work for strings combines jazz, folk, and classical threads into a vibrant fanfare beloved worldwide.
To conclude the program, Rowden and Elton unite to present the world premiere of Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth’s double concerto for clarinet and trumpet, A Turning Sky. Written specifically for the pair, the concerto features a dazzling interplay between the two solo voices.
“Our 2026 concert season marks a bold new direction for Omega Ensemble — one that invites audiences to listen with curiosity and discover beauty in the unexpected,” David Rowden said. “Lachlan’s double concerto embodies that spirit. It moves from sweet, singable melodies to dazzling, colourful flourishes, and draws on his long collaboration with David Elton to craft a score that lets the trumpet, clarinet and ensemble truly shine. Paired with high-energy works by Shostakovich, Finzi and Montgomery, it sets the tone for a year of real momentum.”
Don’t miss some of Australia’s finest performers as they traverse the full spectrum of human experience, from tenderness to tumult.
