Across two remarkable performances at Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, the Omega Ensemble concludes its 2026 season
with The Trout, a luminous and serene finale on Saturday 28 November.
Anchored by Franz Schubert’s timeless Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (The Trout), the season finale features the world premiere of Brave, Wise, Beautiful, Wild by Australian composer Anne Cawrse, presented alongside French composer Guillaume Connesson’s Sextet.
Commissioned especially for Omega Ensemble, Cawrse’s new piece draws inspiration from a chapter of Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ classic Women Who Run with the Wolves. Fascinated by the fairytale - ‘Vasilisa the Brave’ - a variant of the Cinderella story, Cawrse said the “...story leapt off the page, asking to be turned into music”.
Known for exploring the musical potential hidden within the words of female writers, the Adelaide-based composer has created a work glowing with strength and poise. And has found thematic links between the movements, presenting an unpredictably colourful harmonic palette to tell this dark, gothic take on the classic fairytale.
A highly sought-after award-winning voice in the Australia art music world, Cawrse’s accolades include the Albert Maggs Prize for Composition, the Bishop Memorial Commission, a Prelude Composer Residency and the inaugural Women in Music commission.
On this new work, Cawrse said, “I’m so glad to be bringing this new piece to life with the Omega Ensemble. The music explores the metaphor and symbol of intuition, initiation and the importance of the wild feminine. I have selected five ideas from Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ version of the story and created musical reflections for audiences to contemplate and enjoy.”
Completing the program are two brilliant works by Franz Schubert and Guillaume Connesson. Schubert’s iconic Piano Quintet The Trout reveals a world of clarity and grace, its effortless melodies unfolding with joyful ease. In contrast, Connesson's modern Sextet bursts with colour and rhythmic drive, shifting seamlessly between shimmering lyricism and playful spontaneity.
“For our final program of 2026, I wanted to explore the contrasts between Anne’s mysterious new work, the warmth and vitality of Schubert, and the vibrant colours of Guillaume Connesson,” says Omega Ensemble’s Artistic Director, David Rowden. “There’s a spirit of discovery and joy running through this program, and I can’t think of a better way to close the year with our audiences.”
Don’t miss the grand finale of Omega Ensemble’s impressive 2026 season.
