The Nimbin Youth Film Festival NYFF 2016 is calling for entries.

It is open to young people who live in the Lismore, Tweed, Byron, Ballina, Richmond Valley, Clarence Valley and Kyogle Local Government areas

Now in it's seventh year the Festival has $1500 in prizes plus trophies to be won.

The film festival celebrates youth, creativity and the language of film.

Young people have important stories to tell, and there is no better way to have people

listen to your story, than invite them to sit quietly, in a darkened room with a big screen and big sound. Film is a convincing medium, and this festival puts the power of this medium into the hands of young people.

This year sees NYFF growing with a new section added- the 19-24 year old section

with $600 in prizes. This new category is sponsored by North Coast TAFE NSW, and opens the festival up to a wider range of entries. So now all young people aged 24 or under, who live in the Northern Rivers are eligible to enter into one of the two sections.

The films can be made on any video device from an I Phone or DSLR camera or a Go Pro to high-end video cameras. The judges are more interested in powerful stories than the latest technology. 2014 overall winner Wake up by Jemima Zahari amd Frewoini Baume

was shot and edited mostly on an I Pod. It is an astonishing film.

The competition judges understand and recognise that filmmaking is a team-sport and encourage young people to get support and guidance from schools, parents, friends and filmmakers. Collaboration is the key to successful filmmaking.

As long as the film's vision and idea comes from young people and they are the drivers/ directors, then the film can be entered. Whole crews are invited to enter.

The festival screening and award ceremony will be held in Pop-Up Cinema in Nimbin in the Town Hall 2 pm Saturday 3rd December 2016, and the whole community is invited to attend. Parents, friends, supporters and the young filmmakers share in the excitement of seeing the films on the big screen for the first time.

Past screenings have been, entertaining, enlightening and educational.

The films have surprised audiences with their audacious creativity and powerful messages, messages from the minds and hearts of our young people.
