During the July 2023 school holidays, artists Rachel Wyder and Kevin Jones travelled to The Beach Indoor Play Centre in Newman, on Martu country, to deliver a two-week residency.

The children explored AWESOME Arts' Creative Challenge 2023 theme of BLOOM by discussing how seeds lie dormant in the soil, germinate, sprout, grow from water and sun, and form into a plant that flowers and fruits. Using paints, paper and plasticine, the children created artworks of local flowers and plants, inspired by the discussions.

Participants also created soundscapes using their voices, percussion, and wind instruments the children made from bamboo and pipe. Together they devised performances, with music and movement, exploring how seeds grow and plants BLOOM.

The residency ended with a celebration event for the local community, which included sharing their visual artworks and performances. The young people performed 3 original songs, accompanied by a choreographed dance.

This Creative Challenge residency was proudly supported by BHP.

AWESOME Arts’ Creative Challenge program strives to build pride, break down barriers, and encourage students to see art as a way to connect to their community.
