New Artist Monograph about Eveline Kotai

A comprehensive monograph about the 40-year career of Western Australian artist Eveline Kotai will be launched at Art Collective WA on 18 May 2019 alongside Kotai's survey exhibition ' Trace Elements'. The book features over 170 colour plates of Kotai's artworks and essays by eminent writers: Julie Ewington, Nyanda Smith, and Helen Thurloe.

Traversing painting, drawing, print and stitched collage, Eveline's work conveys technical aptitude and a deep sense of subject - leading to the production of continually unexpected colour, pattern and textural combinations. Eveline's work can be found in many national collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Parliament House and Wesfarmers Arts. Eveline Kotai is a founding member of Art Collective WA, and will be WA Now: Artist in Focus at Art Gallery of WA 17 Aug 2019 - 20 Jan 2020.

In a densely hung room at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Eveline Kotai's 'Trace Elements' (2016) is notable for its quiet, controlled energy. This meticulous thing is made of thin, finely stitched strips of cut-up painted canvas, applied to an underlying canvas ground, which lay down an insistent rhythmic polyphony out of fragments of previous paintings. ... Bright colours sing a discontinuous lyric on a sparkling white ground across the five rectangular panels that make up its horizontal extent...
