The National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) unveils Future/Forward, the national event that will ignite the nation's capital with timely thinking to shape the future of the arts, from August 14-15 at the National Gallery of Australia and Parliament House in Canberra.

Esther Anatolitis, NAVA Executive Director says that following the disappointment of last week's Federal Budget in failing to offer a vision for strengthening and championing Australia's contemporary arts, Future/Forward will act as an instigator on how best to advance rights, sustain incomes and develop practice in Australia today.

"Australian artists offer a vital perspective on today and on the future. The Federal Budget's clear lack of initiatives, measures or announcements for Australia's thousands of contemporary artists and millions of audiences is concerning.

"Artistic courage ignites Australian culture. Australians expect our Government to express confidence in artists to through sophisticated policy approaches that foster our unique Australian culture and inspire curious imaginations," Anatolitis says.

Coinciding with the Parliamentary sitting week, Future/Forward is a two-day event in the heart of the nation that brings together arts practitioners and industry professionals to lead new conversations about Australia's contemporary arts. The event has a strong action agenda on best practice standards and the politics of policy change.

Featuring renowned artists such as Abdul Abdullah, Fiona Foley, Patricia Piccinni, Peter White and media arts group PVI Collective, Future/Forward will blend together talks, hypotheticals, scenarios, games and case studies that encourage artistic thinking for creative action.

"Future/Forward will enable space for courageous thinking and critical debate. Together we will create a shared vision of ambitious policy for the arts sector, and the critical steps we need to achieve them," Anatolitis adds.

NAVA welcomes artists, organisational, government and philanthropic leaders to attend and participate actively in the arts political debate. Tickets are available online at https://visualarts.net.au/future-forward/ with an early-bird special available until June 12, and discounts for NAVA Members.
