Merrigong Theatre Company is thrilled to present Melbourne Theatre Company’s production of My Brilliant Career, an electric reimagining of Miles Franklin’s classic Australian novel into a big-hearted musical, for the final leg of its limited, exclusive Australian tour, from Friday 8th to Tuesday 17th May.
The Wollongong run is the final chance for Australian audiences to see the smash-hit sensation which debuted in Melbourne in 2024 to sold-out audiences, multiple five-star reviews, and five Green Room Awards, including Outstanding Production. In 2025, My Brilliant Career won the prestigious $120,000 David Williamson Prize for Excellence in Writing for Australian Theatre and the AWGIE Award for best script in Music Theatre.
Set in the sweeping landscapes of 1890s Australia, Miles Franklin’s literary heroine is now a singer-songwriter for this very moment. Unapologetically ambitious, Sybylla Melvyn is wholly uninterested in the future society expects of her. Instead, she marches to the beat of her own drum, challenging class, gender and family to find her own voice.
Merrigong Theatre Company’s Artistic Director & CEO Simon Hinton said: "I think our audience will be absolutely blown away by the musical My Brilliant Career as part of Merrigong’s 2026 Season. It’s the most exciting, dynamic new Australian musical to premiere in the last decade. Wollongong being included on this very limited, exclusive Australian tour means people across our region will get to experience this truly unforgettable production.”
Artistic Director and Co-CEO of Melbourne Theatre Company, Anne-Louise Sarks said, "Creating My Brilliant Career and going on tour is a defining moment for us. It is a bold new version of an Australian classic - taking its place in Australian theatre history. We’re so proud to be making theatre of this scale and ambition here in Melbourne, and after the incredible response from Melbourne audiences, we are excited to take it to people right across Australia.”
Led by the formidable Kala Gare (SIX the Musical, One Eyed Man Productions’ Calamity Jane), My Brilliant Career features an all-star cast including Raj Labade (Belvoir’s King Lear), Ana Mitsikas (HIT Productions’ WaistWatchers The Musical!), Christina O’Neill (MTC’s Well That Happened), Cameron Bajraktarevic-Hayward (Sport for Jove’s Bright Star), Melanie Bird (Crossroads Live’s Sister Act: The Musical), Drew Livingston (Hayes Theatre Co’s Zombie the Musical), Lincoln Elliott (Hayes Theatre Co’s Phar Lap: The Electro-Swing Musical), Victoria Falconer (Adelaide Festival’s Hedwig and the Angry Ich), Jarrad Payne (Adelaide Festival’s Hedwig and the Angry Ich), Jack Green (Malthouse Theatre’s Hour of the Wolf) and Meg McKibbin (Bell Shakespeare’s The Players).
With a powerhouse score blending contemporary pop, bush ballad and raucous pub rock, and breathtaking design from Tony Award-winner Marg Horwell, this audacious, exuberant show is a must-see for audiences.
