Travel with a small group of like-minded people, an excellent tutor, the best traditional accommodation, food and music. It's suitable for beginners or advanced and partners and travel companions welcome! Primarily an immersive, cultural holiday we will explore the rich and complex history and contemporary life of Morocco where the indigenous Amazigh (Berber) people maintain a strong connection with the land and their ancient traditions and lifestyle.
Renowned artist Wendy Sharpe will lead a 10 day Painting Tour for Amazigh Cultural Tours Morocco. With a long list of major prizes including the Archibald, Sulman and Portia Geach Memorial Prizes and various overseas residencies in Paris, Egypt, Mexico and Antarctica, Wendy is one of Australia's most awarded artists.

Wendy lives and works between Sydney and Paris, has always loved travelling and has been to Morocco three times before to draw and paint. She is a generous, supportive and experienced teacher, with experience at all levels from hobby classes to post graduate university. However, for the last 10 years Wendy has only taught 'when it is really special' "“ like our tour to Morocco!

Wendy will be a wonderful host and will focus on the medium of gouache on paper, sharing her working method that is fresh and immediate, responding to her surroundings by working directly from life. Using gouache will suit working in a variety of places as we travel and explore different subjects including architectural spaces, urban life, landscape and portraits including colourful Moroccan interiors and dress. Wendy will demonstrate gouache techniques as we work side by side with her and respond to the experience of travelling in this unique land. We will draw inspiration from the rich cultural history and traditional arts and crafts to develop individual paintings together with a visual diary in concertina format that will record our experience. Reviews and critiques of the works and evening discussions will be a time to share ideas as we learn about Morocco.

Presenting Specialist Art Tours, ACTM works with selected artists who have a culturally sensitive approach to place and a specialist media or area of practice that provides a focus for a cultural experience with a difference. We will traverse a large part of southern Morocco. Beginning in the ancient city of Marrakech we will travel over the Atlas Mountains, passing through rugged landscape, oasis valleys, exploring the Ksars and Kasbahs of the adobe villages en route. We finish the tour with a few nights at the picturesque fishing port of Essaouira.

Finding a balance between site seeing and art making, some days will involve guided tours, visits to major cultural sites or long drives through spectacular landscape, while other days will devote more time for painting.

The warmth and good humour of the people in Morocco is immense and the insights into the Islamic world, Amazigh spirituality and contemporary life are fascinating. Accommodation is provided in the most comfortable traditional guesthouses, where we will enjoy the extraordinary delights of local food, hospitality and traditional music. Traveling with a small group of like-minded people and an experienced team of cohosts including Australian artist/curator Rita Lazauskas and professional Amazigh Guide Abdenabi Imelouane, the program offers an innovative and creative way to explore a new place that is stimulating, supportive and safe.
