METAMORPHOSES by Ovid - written and first directed by Mary Zimmerman, USA

BY Geoff Sirmai Watchdog | 27-Jun-2012
Tales from Ovid are presented in all their glory - mischievous, beautiful, savage and timeless - in an Australian premiere of the Tony-award-winning adaptation that illuminates the power of storytelling. Actors transform into character after character. Stories flow from the divine to the horrific. All of our collective primal instincts are on display - and more truthfully than we may care to admit…

“Recaptures the primal allure of the theatre.” TIME Magazine

Join two of Sydney's most exciting young independent theatre companies at the PACT theatre in Sydney’s inner west for a fresh and furious take on ancient mythology in a sexy, provocative and shatteringly contemporary performance!

Beautifully staged, this challenging work features ten actors exploring 65 characters in a dozen myths where the human body is the epicentre of dramatic transformation. A very modern meditation on the ancient myths without glossing over their classical power and weight.

For brilliant young Greek-Australian director Dino Dimitriadis (Closer, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, To Kill a Mockingbird ) this is – perhaps surprisingly - his first 'Greek' play. He promises a heady mixture of performance styles ranging from classical text, contemporary image, live sound, physical sequences and more.

“The play is strikingly beautiful at times,” says Dino. “and brutal and violent at others: there is homicide, cannabalism, incest , sexual ecstasy and more. And yes, the play does contain nudity.”

The production is co-presented by Apocalypse and bAKEHOUSE, two companies both committed to giving a stage to emerging artists, meaningful and striking adaptations of classics and freeing theatre to be a forum for engaging universal dialogues in contemporary contexts.

The season also features an art installation in the foyer entitled ‘Myth’. It features a number of works in different media that explore the notion of the word in various ways. This is part of Apocalypse’s founding commitment to accompany theatre with the visual arts.

Directed by Dino Dimitriadis for Apocalypse and bAKEHOUSE theatre companies, with lighting Design by Ross Graham, Metamorphoses stars Jarrod Crellin, Sophie Haylen, Richard Hilliar, Daniel Hunter, Jacqui Livingston, Danielle Maas, Alex Nicholas, Katrina Rautenberg, Katherine Shearer and Tim Warden.
