Mark Rodda's upcoming exhibition Benign Complex draws upon traditions of romantic landscapes, figurative paintings and modernist abstraction. Describing his paintings as pure escapism', Rodda creates landscapes of his own imaginings that invite viewers to form new narratives from their own constructed memories and reveries.

Alongside his landscape works, Rodda paints abstracts that draw from abstract constructions from the early to mid 20th century and that ruminate on the unexpected links between opposing forces, the relation between the macro and micro, the universe and the atom.

Rodda uses a unique system of artist-made synthetic polymer tiled frames, invoking a preciousness akin to religious icon paintings, fetishising a precious, jewel-like', object. These paintings with tiled frames explore the interplay of fine art's inspiration and brashness, with the meditative and deliberate crafted form.

MARK RODDA was born in Tasmania and lives and works in Melbourne. He has held over 20 solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group shows in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. He was a finalist in the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2013 and in 2014 won the prestigious Glover Prize (for landscape) in Evandale, Tasmania. His work is held in the collection of Artbank and corporate and private collections.
