An artist drawn to the beauty in the everyday materials that surround us, Menzies' sculptures use materials harvested from under the kitchen sink.

According to Menzies: I'm drawn to steel wool because it lives within two disparate and opposing worlds, the industrial and the domestic, and this duality creates an intersecting space to play. I want to create work where meaning can overlap and flicker between such binary oppositions.

The exhibition will showcase a number of sculptures made of wire mesh and mesh thread, complimented by a series of charcoal drawings, highlighting the tactile and tangible experience of objects in an increasingly virtual world.

Gallery Director Melinda Martin is delighted to be presenting this new body of work by one of our Artists in Residence as part of our Linden Projects Space exhibition program in 2021. We look forward to visitors exploring this exhibition by a significant Southside Melbourne-based artist.

Carolyn Menzies is a visual artist who lives and works in Melbourne. Her sculptural forms have been exhibited in New Zealand, Australia and the UK where she completed a MA in Fine Arts. Her previous works have also highlighted steel as the hallmark of modern sculpture.

In 2019 she was a finalist in the Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Prize. She was an Australian Tapestry Workshop artist in residence in 2021 and is currently an artist in residence at Linden New Art.
