Following their Sydney Theatre Award winning production Three Fat Virgins Unassembled, Asian-Australian theatre company Slanted Theatre returns to present LADY PRECIOUS STREAM 王寶川 by Chinese playwright S. I. Hsiung, from 1–2 April at The Flying Nun by Brand X in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

The play follows Precious Stream 寶川, born into nobility in the time of the Tang Dynasty. As the youngest daughter of the Prime Minister, she must make a difficult choice between the husband she desires and the husband her family wishes for her to marry. Will duty to her family, or true love prevail?

Based on a traditional Chinese story and written in English, the play was originally staged in London in the 1930s as an ‘authentic’ Chinese play, and performed by an English cast.

It went on to have 1000 performances in London, and a successful run on Broadway. In a reimagining of this story, Slanted Theatre presents the original Hsiung translation almost 100 years after its first performance, but turns the production on its head with a contemporary Western design and a blend of Eastern and Western performance styles and music.
