Kurrawang Students Shining through the Arts
Students and staff at CAPS Kurrawang school in the community of Kurrawang welcomed visual artists Minaxi May and Sally Stoneman into their school for a week of creative exploration.
Earlier this year AWESOME Arts 2019 Creative Challenge visited the community at CAPS Kurrawang with the arts project, 'Shine'. The program is designed for remote and regional schools and is presented by Go for 2&5. The Creative Challenge program has successfully delivered high quality learning and creative experiences in the arts domain across Western Australia for over 20 years
Artists Minaxi May and Sally Stoneman worked with students at CAPS Kurrawang focusing on celebrating the individual things that make us all 'Shine'! Students explored tactile materials and storytelling to create an array of beautiful artworks. Older students fashioned exquisite headdresses while younger students created masks that reflected their inner self.
Creative Challenge is AWESOME's year-round regional program that visits predominantly regional and remote communities in Western Australia, as well as running some select metropolitan residencies. The theme 'Shine' celebrates the young people living in Western Australia, asking them to explore what makes them and their community unique. Each art work created is inspired by the culture, experiences and aspirations of the students making it, reflecting on their sense of identity, community and place. The highly-experienced team of artists specialise in facilitating skills-focused, process driven workshops.
AWESOME and the Creative Challenge Team are thrilled that Healthway, are back on board for another year as a proud supporter of the Creative Challenge program and that it can assist to spread the Go for 2&5 health message. Healthway Chief Executive Officer Ms Susan Hunt PSM said Healthway was proud to partner with AWESOME Arts for the Creative Challenge program.
"This annual program will see the Go for 2&5 nutrition message reach around 100,000 young people State-wide, including more than 1,500 people living in remote WA communities," Ms Hunt explained. "This is a fantastic program using contemporary arts as a way to encourage young people to learn about the importance of eating more fruit and vegetables, and participate in healthy activities every day," she said.
In 2019 AWESOME has a team of thirty-two artists from all over Australia on multimedia projects. Over the year AWESOME has visited 21 communities in Western Australia to work with the local schools and communities. Selected artworks and photographs were showcased at AWESOME's major annual event the AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things held in the Perth Cultural Centre from 5-18 October.
