Big Objects' is an exhibition of new works by Central Victorian artist Kim Barter, combining mono prints, 3-dimensional wall based works and artist books.

Woven throughout Kim Barter's artwork is a common thread of reference to the human condition and a deep connection to her environment.

Barter's printmaking process is of an intuitive nature, through layering and mark making, figures and objects take form, numbers and letters can be found much like faded inscriptions found on the surface of a desk. Themes pertaining to history, identity and environment are explored.

In this new body of work, Barter investigates the way in which we identify with the objects that we surround ourselves with, how we select, gather and arrange them. How these objects carry story.

With a focus on the 'chair' Barter examines the visual, emotional and practical importance of these everyday objects. In some instances, the chair is represented in giant proportions. The inanimate object is transformed into a totem or a living presence, with symbolic charge.

Barter speculates on the 'chair' as an 'object that has played a role as witness in a private or public space over generations' and carries with it a memory.
