Katthy Cavaliere: Photographs and Drawings
Curated by Grace Burzese

Katthy Cavaliere (1972 "“ 2012) was an Italian born Australian artist who worked across performance, installation, photography, video, film and drawing. This exhibition of selected photographs and drawings spanning 1999 to 2011, complements her career-spanning retrospective Katthy Cavaliere: Loved, curated by Daniel Mudie Cunningham, concurrently showing at Carriageworks (until 11 September).

This posthumous exhibition is Cavaliere's first show in a commercial gallery. It includes performance production stills from Cavaliere's major works performed at Artspace "“ story of a girl (1999) and loved (2008). Selections of the artist's memorable 'camera obscura' experiments from Hill End, New South Wales, are included alongside her final works nest (2010) and afterlife (2011) "“ tributes to her deceased mother.

Other photographs include untitled home "“ from an installation first exhibited on this site at MOP Projects in 2007 "“ and early important works such as suspended moment and transient collage "“ which in their original installation and video form were awarded the Helen Lempriere Traveling Art Scholarship in 2000. This award enabled study and travel in Italy in the early 2000s where she completed the installations invisible city (2002) and spirito del paese: mother and child (2003) in her homeland.

While drawing and diary writing were a cornerstone of her process as an artist, this remained intensely private and off-view. This exhibition provides a rare insight into her drawing practice with a suite of intimate works sourced from her 2000 Milan diaries. Book also available:
