Picasso, Warhol and hip-hop come together in Blacktown Arts Centre's latest exhibition, It's Our Thing, a free event taking place from June 2nd to August 6th.
It's Our Thing revisits the emergence of hip-hop in Blacktown during the 1990s, when university students gave the popular music genre an Australian accent that stuck, and examines how hip-hop culture influenced the work of two leading contemporary artists Khaled Sabsabi and Minky Rawat.
Visitors to Blacktown Arts Centre will also have the opportunity to view the iconic artworks by Warhol and Picasso that influenced Sabsabi and Rawat at the time.
"We are thrilled to bring artworks by some of the most renowned artists of the 20th century to Blacktown," said Councillor Stephen Bali, Mayor of Blacktown City. "Great works by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol are rarely exhibited in Western Sydney. Art isn't meant to be exclusive and this is a rare opportunity to see the great works of art that inspire people up close and personal, alongside important interdisciplinary works by Australian artists."
Throughout the exhibition, visitors to Blacktown Arts Centre can participate in free artist-led workshops and a panel discussion with the artists and curators which will explore hip-hop culture in Blacktown now, and in the 1990s, and feature a demonstration of analogue sound mixing by Khaled Sabsabi (6 July, 7 "“ 9pm).
Pioneering hip-hop crew Def Wish Cast and emerging local act Soul Benefits will perform at the opening from 6pm, and the exhibition will culminate in a performance on Saturday 6 August 2016 featuring Def Wish Cast, Soul Benefits and break-dancers, SKB Crew.
