Metro Arts proudly presents POOFTA and Wanblut; two captivating exhibitions that explore human identity through new video, painting and sculpture as part of the 2018 season. An immersive video installation created by Callum McGrath, POOFTA addresses ambiguities of identity by deep diving into queer histories, rugby league, artistic legacies and family biographies.

Metro Arts proudly presents POOFTA and Wanblut; two captivating exhibitions that explore human identity through new video, painting and sculpture as part of the 2018 season.
An immersive video installation created by Callum McGrath, POOFTA addresses ambiguities of identity by deep diving into queer histories, rugby league, artistic legacies and family biographies.
Inspired and influenced by British filmmaker Derek Jarman and Cuban-American artist Félix González-Torres, McGrath said POOFTA takes viewers on an interactive journey, exploring the representation of masculinity and queer male sexuality.
"POOFTA ponders the more serious side of queer history, incorporating reflections of violence against homosexuals and queer histories" said McGrath.
"Using impressive architectural interventions, the work transforms Metro Arts' Gallery to take viewers on a personal journey through the exhibition," he said.
Presented alongside McGrath's work will be Claudia Greathead's Wanblut which dwells on familial relationships and is developed from her reflection on family, specifically her father.
Repainted in Greathead's distinctive style and palette are personal family images that punctuate the discovery and development of her familial connections.
Greathead explains that her exhibition emerged from a combination of family photographs, travel and a process of self-discovery through isolation.
"Since a young age, I have used painting as a type of therapy; painting what I knew and exploring the way figures transformed in front of me," Greathead said.
Sitting side-by-side, McGrath's sculptures and Greathead's paintings allude to the anxiety and potential for alienation that runs parallel to connection.
Wanblut and POOFTA are free exhibitions on display at Metro Arts from 13th - 30th June 2018.
