With reference to major works on display, Clarissa will trace some of the key themes that dominated Vike's art from the time of his arrival in Perth in August 1929 until his death in 1988. Consideration will then be given to the work that Vike made in Perth during the 1930s. That decade was one of substantial economic, social, cultural and political turmoil and Vike's involvement in a number of cultural and political organisations saw him produce some extraordinary images that at the time, and to this day, run counter to the popular understanding about art and culture in 1930s Perth. By turning to a number of 1930s works in the exhibition, many of which are being exhibited for the first time, Clarissa will suggest that Vike's art provides unique and valuable insights into our history.
