This October, artist Guy James Whitworth is set to unveil his latest solo exhibition, What Maketh a Man, a collection of sketch works which kicks off from October 23-29th at the Shop Gallery, Glebe.

Years in the making, What Maketh a Man is a stunning collection of over 40 studies of the male nude, deconstructing and challenging the concept of modern masculinity, gender roles and sexual politics by literally stripping away all pretense and artifice.

With models selected from all walks of life, subjects include a sportsman, a bodybuilder, a political activist, an investment banker, a dancer and a poet. A brilliantly diverse line up of men who have bared all to help redefine what makes a man under the artistic interpretation of Whitworth's eye.

Included within the collection, are pieces featuring a number of transgender men, assisting Whitworth as he poses questions around whether masculinity is nature or nurture; passed down through generation to generation, or individually assumed and often hidden behind.

Whitworth said "Men die by suicide 3.5 times more often than women. As someone who has struggled throughout life with the concept of masculinity and where I fit within its narrow boundaries, this exhibition is me offering a visual remedy to other men who struggle.

In modern life there is an outdated and unrealistic benchmark of masculinity, this exhibition is an attempt to antidote and counteract that, hopefully inspiring new positive and diverse ideals of masculinity".
