For the third program in their unforgettable 2025 season, Australia’s premier Baroque ensemble presents five virtuosic violin concertos by the founding fathers of the genre, Telemann, Leclair, Handel, Vivaldi, and Bach, with performances at the Sydney Opera House’s Utzon Room (September 26th), the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music (September 27th) and St Finbar’s Church, Glenbrook (September 28th).
Witness the virtuoso of acclaimed Australian violinist, and Churchill Fellow Simone Slattery. An “infinitely expressive” (The Advertiser) performer on both modern and Baroque violin, Slattery has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician at festivals ranging from the Adelaide Festival to the BBC Proms and is the co-founder of the award-winning Bowerbird Collective.
Joining her onstage is renowned Baroque violinist Rafael Font who has worked with the UK’s finest early music groups from the Academy of Ancient Music to La Nuova Musica, and in the world’s greatest concert venues, including the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall. Now based in Sydney, Font regularly performs with Australia’s leading ensembles, including the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Pinchgut Opera, and the Australian Haydn Ensemble.
Together with Bach Akademie Australia’s Artistic Director and violinist Madeleine Easton, the trio will journey to 17th century Europe, the birthplace of the violin.
Opening the program is Vivaldi’s fiery portrait of Akbar, a 16th century Indian ruler, in his Concerto, ‘Il grosso mogul’, followed by French violinist-composer Leclair’s crowning achievement, his virtuosic Violin Concerto No.1, Op. 7 in D minor.
Witness Handel’s only concerto written for a solo string instrument, the sublime Violin Concerto in B flat, followed by Telemann’s richly orchestrated Concerto in A minor, a dance-inspired gem rarely performed in concert halls today.
The program concludes with J.S Bach’s secular work of pure splendour, his Violin Concerto in E Major.
Artistic Director Madeleine Easton says, “The word ‘violin’ has become synonymous with classical music. The instrument has become so incredibly popular and famous due to its ability to convey technical brilliance and emotional expression, transcending social status and cultures around the world. Its rise was fueled by the masterful craftsmanship of makers like Stradivarius, which elevated it above other instruments and led to more concertos being written for it than for any other. In this program, we present five works written for the violin by five titans of the baroque period from three different countries. It is on the shoulders of these geniuses that all future composers of the violin concerto stand and were inspired by the Art of the Violin.”
This enchanting program of untamed virtuosity and musicality is not to be missed.
Tickets for The Art of Violin, and the remainder of the 2025 season, are currently on sale now at: https://www.bachakademieaustralia.com.au/events.
On 13 September, Madeleine Easton, Bach Akademie Australia Artistic Director, will work with gifted students from the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music in an interactive masterclass exploring technique and musicality across a wide range of repertoire for solo violin.
