The first comprehensive exhibition analysing the work of respected Japanese architect Ryoji Suzuki will be on display at Monash University's Art, Design and Architecture (MADA) Gallery from 26 May until 9 June.

Suzuki is an architectural equivalent of auteur filmmakers, who are dedicated to persistently pursuing particular themes and explorations while quietly accumulating a cult following such as Alfred Hitchcock or Quentin Tarantino. Suzuki is renowned for multimedia architectural projects such as Osaka Folly 4 (1990), Sagishima Project (1995), Project Konpira (2004) and the award winning DUBHOUSE film (2013).

The exhibition, curated by Associate Professor Ari Seligmann and MADA architecture students, is the first assemblage and analysis of Suzuki's work outside of Japan.

The exhibition illuminates the ideas and outcomes of Suzuki's ongoingseries of Experience in Material projects, demonstrating how architectural ideas are explored and materialised in multimedia forms.

The exhibition at MADA Gallery examines the evolution of Suzuki's key design strategies, the orchestration of architectural elements, the details and sequences developed to create architectural experiences, and the diverse multimedia repertoires of representation employed in his explorations.

The exhibition shows how ideas evolve and transform through projects, and identifies pursuits that weave throughout Suzuki's work.

While introducing and interrogating Suzuki's Experience in Material projects, the exhibition also expands understanding of the breadth of Japanese architecture and provides a platform to reflect on the processes and potentials of materialising architectural ideas.

Suzuki will be in Australia for the opening of the exhibition and will participate in a workshop with the exhibition team discussing his work and the analysis produced.
