Rachael Helmore is a Sydney based artist who explores the possibilities of drawing and mark-making. First Impression presents a selection of recent artworks created across New South Wales, Queensland and the UK. Helmore's process often involves automatic drawing, depicting a scene in front of her without looking at the paper. These works reveal images which bypass the eye to capture fleeting movements and interactions, playfully highlighting human behaviour in urban landscapes. Helmore embraces the possibility of chance and error as the nature of placing ink to paper leaves permanent impressions. This unselfconscious process generates a new, perhaps more authentic encounter with the everyday.
