Steve Lopes is a Sydney based painter and printmaker known for his figurative landscape. He often works en plein air, painting vignettes of a place which are used as references for large-scale studio works.

His new exhibition captures the rich experience of our existence. Filled with expressive colour and bold imagery, Lopes combines complex compositions and narrative figures close to the artist’s life.

While his landscapes are representations of what he sees, the figures are often imagined personalities subsequently placed into the composition.

The depiction of isolated figures emphasises the displacement of the human figure within the world.

“These works deal with our defiance of fate and our essential vulnerabilities,” Lopes says. “In the increasingly shattered world we find ourselves in, this is an intangible attempt to capture visually the very fleetingness of our being.”

An avid traveller, Lopes’ insatiable curiosity for new experiences drives his art, through which he connects the threads of history and place with the people who have shaped them.

Steve Lopes has won the Gallipoli Art Prize and the Kings School Art Prize in Sydney. His works have been acquired in collections such as the National Art Gallery of Australia, Parliament House Art Collection, Canberra, BHP Billiton Art Collection and the Time Warner Collection in New York.

Join Lopes in the gallery for an exclusive Artist Talk followed by an Opening for 'Everyone's Amazing' on Saturday 1 November from 2pm.
