Lorna Fencer Napurrula (c.1920 - 2006) stands as one of the most distinctive and influential figures in the evolution of contemporary Aboriginal art. A senior Warlpiri woman and highly respected cultural custodian, Lorna’s paintings are more than visual expressions, they are ancestral maps, ceremonial rhythms, and expressions of her cultural identity.

This exhibition invites viewers to journey through her work, exploring a life devoted to the preservation of law (Jukurrpa), the assertion of women’s authority, and the transformation of traditional motifs into a revolutionary new visual language.

Throughout her career, Lorna’s paintings were exhibited across Australia and internationally, earning critical acclaim. Her work is held in major national collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Yet beyond the accolades and institutional recognition, Lorna Fencer’s enduring legacy is her ability to bridge worlds, to bring the intense power of the desert into conversation with a broader contemporary audience.
