'Australia Has Cowboys Too' is a dynamic new body of work that repositions the cowboy figure within an Australian context. Known for his sharp political instincts and unmistakable pop art style, Gohier uses this latest body of work to probe the myths, histories, and cultural contradictions that shape life in both the Northern Territory and Australia more generally.

Gohier has long embraced the visual language of pop art, but he deploys it with a distinctly critical edge. His bold colours, graphic outlines, and reworked mass media imagery serve as tools for questioning the stories Australians inherit about themselves. In this exhibition, the cowboy becomes a symbol through which Gohier examines the Territory’s frontier identity, its toughness, its humour, and its uneasy historical legacies.

'Australia Has Cowboys Too' ultimately reflects on how nations build their icons and how those icons shape collective memory. Through his distinctive blend of pop art technique, historical reference, and incisive humour, Gohier offers a fresh and compelling take on the cowboy myth, affirming his position as one of Australia’s most important contemporary artists.

Join Franck in the gallery for an exclusive Artist Talk, followed by an Opening Event on Saturday 20 June, 3 - 5pm. This is a free event, no RSVPs required.
